Common Questions

Everything you want to know about electrolysis

Is electrolysis actually permanent?+

Yes. Electrolysis is the only hair removal method the FDA recognizes as permanently effective. It destroys the hair follicle completely so the hair cannot regrow. Laser is classified as "permanent hair reduction" — not permanent removal. Laser reduces hair, but treated hairs can come back, especially with hormonal conditions.

How much does electrolysis cost?+

Sessions at Bare Hair Electrolysis are charged by time: 15 minutes is $30, 30 minutes is $45, 1 hour is $80, 90 minutes is $115, 2 hours is $150, and 3 hours is $220. Booking longer sessions saves money per minute. Free consultations are always available.

Does electrolysis work on blonde, gray, red, or white hair?+

Yes — electrolysis works on every hair color. Laser requires pigment in the hair follicle and cannot treat light-colored or gray hair. Electrolysis has no such limitation and is the only permanent option for people with blonde, gray, red, white, or fine hair.

Does electrolysis work on dark skin tones?+

Yes. Electrolysis is safe and effective on all skin tones. Laser carries a significant risk of burns, hyperpigmentation, and scarring on darker skin. Electrolysis targets the follicle directly without relying on skin contrast, making it safe for everyone.

I have PCOS and keep growing facial hair. Will electrolysis work for me?+

Yes. Electrolysis is the most effective long-term solution for PCOS-related hair growth. Because PCOS involves ongoing hormonal stimulation, laser frequently fails or requires constant retreatment. Electrolysis permanently destroys each individual follicle — treated hairs do not return, even as hormones continue to activate new ones.

Is electrolysis worth it compared to laser?+

Yes, especially long term. Laser is not permanent — many clients spend $1,000–$3,000+ on laser, see the hair return (especially with hormonal conditions), and then need electrolysis anyway. Clients who start with electrolysis avoid paying for laser first. Electrolysis costs more per session but ends the cycle permanently.

Do you offer gender-affirming electrolysis?+

Yes. Bare Hair Electrolysis specializes in LGBTQ+ and gender-affirming care, including MTF full facial clearance, FTM body hair removal, and pre-surgical hair removal for gender confirmation surgeries including vaginoplasty and phalloplasty.

Can electrolysis fix hair that got worse after laser?+

Yes. Laser can cause paradoxical hypertrichosis — a condition where laser treatment triggers more hair growth, especially on the face and neck. Electrolysis permanently removes hair caused by this reaction. Many clients come specifically to correct worsening laser results.

Your first consultation is always free.
